If I create an alias, does that create a new email address? Can I receive mail sent to the alias?

An alias is just another version of your email address. It goes to the same mailbox. You are allowed one. You can use a filter if you want to separate into separate folders by matching on the TO field.
Don’t confuse the email alias with alternate profiles. You can have many alternate profiles but only one can be an alternate email address.
