If you write really good fanfiction, is that an indicator that you’re a good writer?

Written by admin on October 18th, 2009

I have a degree in Journalism, I wrote a little for the school paper and I wrote for a nonprofit org’s newsletter. But that was all nonfic. Now, I write fanfics for fun and people tend to LOVE them. So everyone tells me I should write a novel. But I just don’t know if writing good fanfic is a good indicator of whether or not you can write good fiction on your own. I wrote a novel and I’m not very confident in it, and as such have not copyrighted it or published it. But I just keep writing fanfics. I’m just confused. It seems that some readers of fanfic have horrible taste. Maybe the fact that they like my work doesn’t mean much because they’re easily pleased. What are your thoughts on this?

“Whether you think that you can, or that you can’t, you are usually right.”

Try writing a novel. if you like it show other people

in the mean time continue doing what you like

    good luck with it all

Well, maybe you should ask some people to read your novel and see what they say. People tend to criticize their own work, after all. If you think your fanfic readers are too easily pleased, you could go to professional writers for advice (or if that’s too hard to find, English professors at an university). Just because you think it isn’t the best doesn’t make it bad.

As for your first question, I think yes. Writing fanfic is writing and even if it is based off of another story, you are still the one writing the fanfic.

Potentially, but you are going to have to apply yourself out in the real publishing world

Ok the first thing about writing that you have to understand is that there are some people out there that will absolutely love the way you write because the way you write inspires them and then there are the “others” who will **** your work and despise it. You should write the way you like and attract the right crowd towards your writing. Depends on who you are targetting. I always used to think i was terrible at writing in high school because teachers would always correct me. Now that I’ve reached University, there are professors that are trying to get my work published. It made me realize that there will always be people that either love the way I write or **** it. I will always write the way I do because it’s my style whether it makes people’s hearts warm or bitter. Another thing if you really need somone to like ur work and accept it….then go a little into psychology. Research on what they like. What field and what type/kind of style of writing they like. I hope that helps.

I read fanfic alot and most of the time I don’t get very far into them because they ****. I tend to be a serious reader, my house is clutteered with books. They key is, can you write an equally engaging story through characters that you have developed on your own? I am an optimist so I would say go for it with your novel. Remeber the people who read fanfic are quite likely people who read tons of books, thats why they are interested in fanfic in the 1st place.

Just because you write good fan fic doesn’t necessarily mean that you are a good writer it just means that you are good at writing about something you are a fun of. Alot of people write good fan fic and then end up not being such great writers at other things.
